"The Book of Songs" consists of 6 books containing altogether 100 songs: the books are themselves 6 CDs, and the individual songs are recordings of our daily environs: city-noise, the murmur of restaurants, shops, streets, etc. - so to speak, acoustic photography or phonography.

"The Book of Songs" was presented the first time as an installation in 1999. Since that, it was also played as individual pieces or successive selections from the "Book" in concert situations, e.g., performed between and coexistent with instrumental pieces, etc. Some things are lost and others are achieved by that. What is lost in the concert format is the mythological aspect of the "Book" (The number of 100 tracks refers to the number of songs in Dante's "Comedia" and therefore to the insinuation that this arbitrary recordings would comprise it all together: the hell, the heaven - and something in between...) On the other hand, i discovered that the concert presentation is also opening something. To the same degree that the listener (of the installation) looses freedom (the "freedom" of clicking the next track instead of listening to the end), the concert's compulsion to listen is a gift: the gift of beeing given a piece instead of a mere document.
